Washington State has long been a global powerhouse in aerospace, known for its rich history of innovation, excellence, and industry leadership. At the heart of this dynamic sector is a web of incredible companies, from small family-owned businesses to major Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), commercial air and space to sustainable aviation. As aerospace continues to traverse the landscape since the COVID pandemic, it is vital to share the diverse work and innovations of the industry with elected officials and upcoming generations
Aerospace Futures Alliance (AFA) is a Washington State nonprofit, whose mission is straightforward: to help member companies connect, grow, and thrive through statewide advocacy and policy. This mission reflects an understanding that true industry strength lies in collaboration and support. AFA provides a platform where businesses, regardless of size or specialty, can share their successes, challenges, and innovative ideas. Through education, advocacy and initiatives, AFA ensures that member voices are heard at every level of decision making. This advocacy extends beyond individual companies to the collective needs of the industry, ensuring legislators and policymakers understand the deep, multifaceted contributions of aerospace to Washington’s economy and workforce.
One of AFA’s cornerstone events is our annual Aerospace on the Hill Day. Tuesday, January 28, 2025, Washington industry leaders gather in Olympia to meet directly with state legislators. This event is a unique opportunity for businesses to share their stories, highlight their innovations, and emphasize the importance of aerospace, including space and sustainable aviation, to Washington’s economic landscape. These interactions are more than just meetings — they are crucial conversations that showcase impacts of aerospace companies on communities and help to ensure that state leaders understand the depth of the sector.
The future of aerospace depends on today’s students — from recent high school grads to those seeking a career in the skilled trades to follow their passion. We must be deeply committed to workforce development, recognizing that the industry’s long-term success hinges on a highly skilled, enthusiastic talent pool. Connecting students with the aerospace and space sector is vital — not only to inspire the next generation but also to ensure they see viable, exciting career paths in aerospace.
Here in Washington State, we have incredible programs such as the Washington Aerospace Training & Research Center (WATR Center) and Advanced Manufacturing Apprenticeships (AJAC) that work hand in hand with our industry, helping to elevate the quality of our incoming talent. Career Connect Washington (CCW) is a statewide initiative that works to bridge the gap between education and high demand, high wage jobs within Washington. CCW helps to fund programs to support the aerospace industry’s workforce needs in every corner of our state. Together, we must continue to ignite passion and curiosity among young people to help students envision themselves as future innovators in our cutting-edge industry.
Looking ahead, AFA’s vision is clear: to solidify Washington State’s role as a global leader in aerospace innovation. Achieving this goal requires a united industry voice, active participation from member companies, and ongoing engagement with policymakers.
AFA encourages all aerospace businesses to get involved — whether by participating in Aerospace on the Hill Day, joining advocacy efforts, or supporting educational outreach. Every company, regardless of size, has a role to play in shaping the future of aerospace in Washington. This year, we celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the Washington State Space Coalition (WSSC), a key part of AFA. WSSC’s contributions and investments in advanced technology will continue to lead Washington for future generations.
Together, through connection, advocacy, and a shared commitment to excellence, AFA and its members are building a stronger, more innovative aerospace and space industry. This effort not only benefits individual companies but also strengthens the entire state, ensuring a prosperous future for Washington’s economy and communities.
